Description: Memory of My Father RECITED BY BRENDAN ROSS MEMORY OF MY FATHER BY Patrick Kavanagh Every old man I see Reminds me of my father When he had fallen in love with death One time when sheaves were gathered. That man I saw in Gardiner Street Stumble on the kerb was one, He stared at me half-eyed, I might have been his son. And I remember the musician Faltering over his fiddle In Bayswater, London. He too set me the riddle. Every old man I see In October-coloured weather Seems to say to me "I was once your father." -Patrick Kavanagh |

vronskioblonski ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 20:32:51 The poem reminds of the Kurt Cobain line: "I tried hard to have a father, but instead I had a dad." The reference to "Bringing In The Sheaves." Instead of a "We Shall Come Rejoicing" type of guy, you get one who acknowledges the existence of death and failure. The images work well, and the reader's voice, too, gets in my head. Great stuff! __________________________________________________ | |
