bteiv676 ::: Favorites 2007-12-11 22:53:08 I saw PBS's Ellington's story and saw how he used and abused Billy Strahorn's talent...didn't give all of his royalties or deserved credit for all his work. Pretty slimmy... __________________________________________________
thelex001 ::: Favorites 2007-12-03 23:41:13 Frankly, if you've listened to a great deal of any musician, you know his/her sound. Ellington, Basie, Monk, Powell, Evans,Terrasson, Moran, Mehldau, and on and on are all distinctive piano players. No one who knows and loves this music would mistake any of them for anyone else. Thanks, Drumbum0010, for posting a lovely performance. __________________________________________________

chubsoffire ::: Favorites 2007-12-03 22:19:37 My point is that I can listen to any Monk recording and instantly know that it is Monk. I do think Ellington is absolutely essential to jazz. Monk is an enigma. Monks playing is completely original as are his compositions. Monks first album was all Ellington songs, yet when he plays them they sound like Monk wrote them. Who else can do that? __________________________________________________
micahj ::: Favorites 2007-12-03 12:26:46 What are you talking about man?.. Duke was an innovator. Monk was definitely among the most organic improvisers, but take into account when Duke's prime time in the lime light was. Jazz was the popular music of the time. It was the esoteric art form it is now (or even by monk's hay day). Duke's music was before bebop really came into the fore, and think about how prolific and influential duke IS on jazz even now. __________________________________________________
eddyshow ::: Favorites 2007-11-26 22:10:58 My son who is now 3 but eeven when he was 2 he fell in love with Monk,Rouse, and Ben Riely,he play note for note on his toy sax it bought his baby sister to tears when she seen him preform. it's been about a 1 1/2 that he been playing Monk and im still in disbelife. im going to post him to share my joy but these Masters spirit are still alive because his talent is not from me i wish i can say but it would be not true. __________________________________________________
Gettinghitonattheban ::: Favorites 2007-11-22 12:45:45 Good for you. Going straight for the art. Most people tend to listen to the popular swing, which although wasn't bad, can't compare to the experience of listen/playing of Bebop __________________________________________________
EarthSage14 ::: Favorites 2007-11-03 03:42:46 I'm only now starting to get into Jazz, and Thelonious really rocks my socks. He and Nina Simone are just phenomenal pianists. Thanks for posting this. __________________________________________________

JULEZJAZZ ::: Favorites 2007-09-05 14:24:04 Chubsofire, not so fast. You know Coltrane and Charlie Parker when you hear them. They can not be duplicated or imitated. However I digress if you are talking about Piano players. __________________________________________________
